HOW SOLID WOOD FLOORING WORKS

Solid wood flooring uses natural timber planks installed over a properly prepared subfloor. In this installation, timber battens form a supporting framework, with the wooden floorboards fixed on top. The space between the battens may contain infill materials, depending on the installation system.

A properly prepared base, suitable moisture protection, secure fixing and adequate expansion gaps help the floor remain stable as natural wood responds to changes in temperature and humidity.

Prepare the Base -The subfloor must be level, clean and dry before installation. Suitable moisture protection is essential to help protect the timber from moisture-related problems.

Install the Timber Battens - Timber battens are arranged to create a supporting framework beneath the floorboards. Any foam or infill material used depends on the installation system. The solid wood planks are carefully positioned and secured using the appropriate fixing method. Proper alignment helps create a stable, neat finish

Varnishing and Stain Finishing -After installation and surface preparation, the solid wood floor can be finished with a suitable varnish or stain system to enhance its natural grain, colour and appearance. Depending on the product and project requirements, the finish may be applied by hand or using professional finishing equipment.

For solid wood flooring, there are 4 common types of protective coating, classified by the coating system. The best choice depends on the timber, desired appearance and maintenance requirements.

1. Water-Based Polyurethane - Clear, generally low odour and fast drying. Often preferred when you want to retain a natural, lighter wood appearance.

2. Oil-Based Polyurethane (PU) - Creates a durable protective layer and often gives the wood a warmer, amber tone. It generally requires a longer drying time.

3. Hardwax Oil - Penetrates the wood and adds a protective wax component, creating a natural-looking finish. Maintenance requirements depend on the product.

4. Penetrating Oil - Soaks into the timber to enhance its natural grain and appearance. It usually requires periodic reapplication and is a less commonly requested option in typical Malaysian residential flooring projects.

Note: The suitability and availability of each finish depend on the flooring product, manufacturer and installer. Satin, matte and gloss describe the surface sheen and may be available across different coating types.
